Swimming Classes

Class Descriptions

Parent & Child Level A (6-36 Months)
New Skills: Getting wet, water entry, exploring the pool, front and back float and glide, blowing bubbles and rolling back to front and front to back.

Parent & Child Level B (Up to 5 Years)
New Skills: Arm action on front and back, combined stroke on front and back, using side of pool, steps or ramp and ladder to exit water.

Introduction to Water Skills
Toddler 1 (3-5 Years)
Level 1 (6 & Up)

New Skills: Enter and exit water safely, blowing bubbles, open eyes under water, float on front and back, roll over, arm and leg action on front and back and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Enter unassisted, move 5 yards, bob 5 times to chin level and safely exit the water. Participants can walk, travel along the gutter or swim. Float on front with support for 3 seconds, roll to back with assistance and float on back with support for 3 seconds.)

Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Toddler 2 (3-5 Years)
Level 2 (6 & Up)
New Skills: Jumping into water, submerge entire head, front and back glide, combined arm and leg action on front and back, finning, sculling and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Step from side into chest-deep water, move into a front float for 5 seconds, roll over to a back float, return to standing position, then move back to a back float for 5 seconds and return to a standing position. Push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions for 15 feet on the front; push off and swim using a combination of arm and leg actions for 15 feet on the back.)

Level 3 – Stroke Development
New Skills: Head-first entry, rotary breathing, treading water, front and back crawl, butterfly kick and body motion and safety skills. (Exit skills Assessment: Jump into chest-deep water from the side, swim front crawl for 15 yards with face in the water and rhythmic breathing pattern [to front or side], maintain position by treading or floating for 30 seconds and swim back crawl 15 yards.)

Level 4 – Stroke Improvement
New Skills: Dive from compact position, swim underwater, surface dive, open turn on front and back, breast stroke, elementary backstroke, swim on side with scissors kick and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Perform a feet-first entry into chest-deep water, swim front crawl for 25 yards, maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water [float or scull] and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.)

Level 5 – Stroke Refinement
New Skills: Shallow dive from side, survival float, flip turn, treading water, side stroke and safety skills. (Exit Skills Assessment: Perform a shallow dive into deep water, swim front crawl for 50 yards, maintain position on back for 2 minutes in deep water [float or scull] and swim elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Swim breast stroke for 25 yards, tread water for 2 minutes and swim back crawl for 50 yards.)


Getting your child into the correct class.

  • Parent and child classes are for those children who are five years of age or younger and are afraid of the water or cry when the parent leaves them.
  • Toddler classes are for children three to five years of age who are comfortable in the water and do not need a parent present.
  • Children who are six years of age or older and just learning to swim should enroll in Level 1.
